Today's Friday Meal

In our quest to eat in rather than go to a restaurant, we made another restaurant quality meal for dinner.

On the menu tonight was wine, NY strip steak, baked potatoes with sour cream and butter, broccoli and ice cream for dessert.

The NY strip steaks were purchased about 11 months ago when I bought an entire strip loin when they were on sale for $ 5.99 a lb. for a total of $ 63.85. I had the butcher cut them up into 15 steaks. That made the total cost $ 4.25 per steak.

I seasoned the steak with Montreal steak seasoning and Hubby grilled it outside. Since this steak was so huge, we each ate half. That cost us about $ 2.13 each or $ 4.25 for the both of us. I will add another $.10 for both of us for the seasoning which I buy in bulk at B.J.'s so that makes the total $ 4.35.

The baked potatoes were $ 1.99 for 5 lbs. There were 15 potatoes in the bag so each one cost us about $ .13 each or $.26 for the both of us. The butter and sour cream we used was another $ .30 each or $ .60 for the both of us.

Each glass of wine was about $ 1.50 each for a total of $ 3.00.

I purchased fresh broccoli for $ .99 a lb so we used about 1/2 a lb. for a cost of $.50 for both of us.

Lastly we had a Skinny Cow mint ice cream sandwich which I purchased this week for $ 3.99 for the box of 6. So the cost for both of us was about $ 1.34.

Our entire meal cost us $ 10.05 or about $ 5.03 each.

If we had gone out to a medium priced steakhouse, like Danny Sheehan's, for this meal and split a steak, it would have cost us $ 61.95 plus $ 4.96 tax and $ 12.39 tip( Yes, we always tip 20%) for a total of $ 68.15. If we had gone to our favorite restaurant, Russell's for this meal it would have been almost 2 and 1/2 times that amount.

So I will cook a nice meal any day to not spend $ 58.10 or more. Hubby loved this meal and was happy to do the dishes again! That makes me happy.

I hope you all have a wonderful fun weekend. Stay safe.

  2. Absolutely the smartest thing to do! And lately, I"ve been disappointed with restaurant meals. We bought oyster plates the other night (take out) and it was just over $30. I could have fried up some oysters and french fries for a lot less money at home.

  3. Hi AD, this is Chris. Your Friday dinner looks really good. Hubby smoked 2 whole chickens yesterday for us and they were SO good. You would never know they were the .68/lb on sale ones. :)
